Man Killed near Israeli Embassy in Amman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A man was fatally shot by security forces near the Israeli embassy in Amman on Sunday after opening fire, amid heightened anti-Israeli sentiment in Jordan.
The gunman targeted a police patrol in the Rabiah neighborhood, close to the Israeli embassy, according to a security source and state media.
Police had cordoned off the area surrounding the heavily secured embassy earlier in the day, following reports of gunfire.
Residents were ordered to remain indoors as security forces conducted a search for the shooter(s), the security source stated.
Anti-Israeli sentiment has intensified in Jordan since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza.
The operation has sparked widespread anger in Jordan, a neighboring Arab nation with close ties to the Palestinian cause.
In recent weeks, Jordanian security forces have used tear gas to disperse demonstrators marching towards the Israeli embassy in support of Gaza.
The Israeli embassy in Amman has been the site of tension in the past.
In 2017, a shooting incident within the embassy compound left two Jordanians dead and an Israeli security guard wounded.
