WHO, Russia Donate Emergency Surgery Kit to Boost Iran's Response Capacities
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia joined forces with the World Health Organization (WHO) to donate a Trauma and Emergency Surgery Kit (TESK) to Iran's National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in Tehran, to boost the country's emergency response capabilities and healthcare resilience.
Friday's donation forms a crucial segment of the collaborative initiative between the WHO and the Russian Federation.
This joint project, which aims to improve Iran's ability to respond effectively to emergencies, was attended by key figures such as NEMO's Deputy for Development and Human Resources Reza Dehghanpour, WHO's Representative and Head of Mission to the Islamic Republic of Iran Syed Jaffar Hussain, Chargé d'affaires of the Russian Federation Embassy in Tehran Rafael Gevorkyan, and the Russian Embassy's Attache Valerii Malyshev.
The TESK is designed to provide essential materials and equipment catering to the immediate surgical needs of up to 50 patients during emergencies, assuming an average of two operations per patient.
Iran, susceptible to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storms, and man-made incidents like road traffic accidents, stands to benefit significantly from this initiative. The TESK aligns with the broader goal of strengthening healthcare facilities' preparedness, ensuring timely responses to disasters and emergencies with health impacts.
Syed Jaffar Hussain highlighted that the joint endeavor among the WHO, the Russian Federation, and NEMO “underscores the importance of international cooperation in fortifying nations against the multifaceted challenges posed by emergencies and disasters. This donation signifies a concrete step towards building a resilient healthcare system in Iran and stands as a testament to the power of global partnerships in safeguarding public health”.

NEMO, responsible for pre-hospital emergency medical services, possesses the capacity to establish field hospitals during crises. This capability enables on-site care for casualties before their safe transportation to more permanent healthcare facilities.
