Palestine's UN Envoy Calls for Accountability over Israeli Onslaught on Jenin

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, strongly condemned the "barbaric" Israeli attack on the occupied West Bank city of Jenin and its refugee camp.

During a speech on Wednesday, Mansour urged the UN to hold Israel accountable for its crimes and described the situation as "horrific" and an example of "state terrorism in action." He called for practical steps from the international community, emphasizing the need for measures to enforce previous Security Council resolutions, including the halt of Israeli settlement activities.

Mansour urged the UN Security Council to take action and reassure the Palestinian people that they are not being abandoned. He called for accountability and measures to prevent the repetition of such "heinous crimes" against Palestinians. The envoy emphasized the importance of the international community going beyond mere meetings and statements, stating, "They have to do something out of the ordinary."

The Israeli regime military launched a major offensive in Jenin and its refugee camp, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 Palestinians and the injury of dozens. Israeli forces utilized airstrikes, ground operations, and armed drones, targeting innocent civilians and forcing hundreds of families to leave their homes.

The incursion lasted for 44 hours before the regime's troops finally withdrew following a steadfast response from Palestinian resistance fighters.

A group of United Nations experts, cited by the official Palestinian Wafa news agency, described Israel's campaign in Jenin as potentially constituting a "war crime." They condemned the Israeli operations in the West Bank, which led to the killing and displacement of Palestinians and the destruction of homes and infrastructure. The experts expressed concern over the displacement of around 4,000 Palestinians and the collective punishment imposed on the population.

The experts highlighted the use of military weaponry and tactics by Israeli forces and raised serious concerns about reports of preventing medics and ambulances from accessing the casualties. They underscored the need to end Israel's illegal occupation and emphasized that the violence will persist until the occupation is brought to an end.

The United States, as Israel's main ally, has historically shielded the regime from accountability by using its veto power to block anti-Israel measures at the UN. The experts concluded that for the ongoing violence to cease, the illegal occupation by Israel must come to an end, as it is fundamentally flawed.
