Iranian President Discusses Recent Events in Russia with Putin: Kremlin
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi, as reported by the Kremlin press service.
"The Iranian president expressed his full support for the Russian leadership in connection with the events of June 24," the statement said, TASS reported.
On the evening of June 23, audio recordings were shared on Yevgeny Prigozhin's Telegram channel, the founder of Wagner, alleging attacks on his units and blaming the country's military authorities.
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) initiated a criminal investigation into calls for armed mutiny. The Russian Defense Ministry dismissed the allegations of an attack on PMC Wagner's "rear camps" as false information. PMC units affiliated with Prigozhin were redirected to Rostov-on-Don and Moscow. In a televised address to the nation on Saturday, Putin denounced the actions of the Wagner group as armed mutiny and betrayal, promising to take decisive action against the mutineers.
Subsequently, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, in coordination with Putin, held talks with Prigozhin, resulting in the PMC units reversing their course and returning to field camps. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the criminal case against Prigozhin would be dropped, and Prigozhin himself would go to Belarus. Additionally, the Russian authorities assured that those who participated in the mutiny within PMC Wagner would not face prosecution due to their "frontline merits."
