TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon weighed plans for cooperation between the two countries in the battle against terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and organized crimes.

The top Iranian diplomat, who has visited Dushanbe for the 9th annual ministerial meeting of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process, met with the Tajik leader on Monday and attended a formal dinner hosted by Rahmon.

In the gathering, the two officials discussed cooperation between Tehran and Dushanbe in the war on terrorism, radicalism, drug smuggling and other organized crimes.

Zarif and Rahmon also talked about interaction between Iran and Tajikistan in the economic and trade sectors, industry, transportation, as well as scientific and cultural activities, and highlighted the important role of a joint commission for mutual cooperation between the two nations.

After independence, Tajikistan suffered from a civil war which lasted from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow.

Iran was the first nation to establish an embassy in Dushanbe. It was also one of the first countries to extend diplomatic recognition of the newly independent Tajikistan in 1991.
