Iran UN Envoy Urges World to Defy US Sanctions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations called on the international community to disobey the US’ economic terrorism against the Iranian people.

In a post on his Twitter account, Majid Takht Ravanchi highlighted the growing number of governments and organizations that “are advocating ending US' economic terrorism on Iran.”

“Governments and parliamentarians (including from US), UN officials and NGOs are all calling upon US to lift sanctions so we can better fight COVID-19,” the Iranian ambassador added.

“If US does not heed this call, all must defy sanctions,” Takht Ravanchi underlined.

Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on world countries to join a global campaign to disregard the US sanctions against Iran.

“They (US sanctions) literally kill innocents… It is immoral to observe them: doing so has never saved anyone from future US wrath,” the top Iranian diplomat said.

Zarif had already sent a letter to Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, denouncing the US’ sanctions as a major obstacle to the Islamic Republic’s fight against the coronavirus and urging that such unilateral and illegal sanctions should end.
