Iran Marks 32nd Anniversary of Chemical Bombardment of Sardasht (+Video)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian People on Friday marked the anniversary of chemical bombardment of the northwestern city of Sardasht by the Iraqi Ba'ath regime 32 years ago.
Sardasht is the third city after Hiroshima and Nagasaki which became the target of weapons of mass destruction.
Located in Iran's northwestern province of West Azarbaijan, Sardasht was the third city in the world after Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki to become a target of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
On June 28 and 29, 1987, Iraqi bombers attacked 4 crowded parts of Sardasht with chemical bombs and engulfed its residents, women and children, young and old, with fatal chemical gases.
The attack on Iran’s Sardasht left 650 civilians killed.
The assault was very catastrophic that caused innumerable problems. Hiroshima was the first city bombarded with atomic weapons, and Sardasht was the first city attacked with chemical ones.
The Chemicals effects stayed with many of the injured people, especially children for years. After about 32 years, many residents of the city are still suffering from the effects of the attacks and struggling for their lives.
