In a statement on Sunday, Bahram Qassemi underlined that Iran’s missile program is defensive in nature and has been drawn up based on the country’s needs, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.
“No UN Security Council resolution has banned Iran’s missile program or missile tests,” Qassemi underlined.
“The interesting and of course farcical point here is that you are referring to a resolution that you have not only violated by unilaterally and illegally withdrawing from the JCPOA, but also you urge others to breach it, and even threaten to punish or slap sanctions on them if they implement the agreement,” he said in comments addressed to Pompeo.
On Saturday, Mike Pompeo condemned what he described as Iran’s testing of a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads as a violation of the UNSC Resolution 2231.
Resolution 2231 calls upon Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”
Iranian officials have time and again underscored that none of the country’s missiles have been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, because nuclear weapons have basically no place in Iran’s defense doctrine.
