Turkey to Receive Waiver from US Sanctions on Iran: Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Turkey has been told it will receive a waiver from the US sanctions on imports of Iranian oil, Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said on Monday, as Washington re-introduced the sanctions.

Albayrak said Turkey would evaluate what steps it could take after the United States officially announced which countries would be exempt from the sanctions, Reuters reported.

Earlier on Monday, the United States re-introduced sanctions against Iranian oil exports, giving some of its closest allies exemptions that will allow Tehran’s biggest customers, mostly in Asia, to still buy crude for now.

On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal that was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

The US had announced plans to drive Iran’s oil exports down to zero, but backed off from its policy and granted waivers to at least 8 countries that import Iranian oil.
