Iran’s Administration Backs IRGC Missile Program

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Iranian administration praised a recent missile attack the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps launched against terrorists in Syria as a manifestation of national might, stressing that the cabinet supports the IRGC’s missile program and capabilities.

“The dear IRGC’s response to Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) is a symbol of national might,” Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said in a weekly press conference on Tuesday, noting that the country’s might is not protecting national security alone, but contributes to regional security as well.

Asked about the US Senate’s recent bill imposing sanctions on Iran for its missile program and on the IRGC, Nobakht made it clear that President Hassan Rouhani’s administration will keep supporting “all missile activities” by the IRGC and other armed forces of the country.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers no limit to enhancing its missile capabilities,” the spokesman added, underlining that Tehran’s defense power could by no means be subject to negotiations or compromise.

His comments came after the IRGC on Sunday night fired six high-precision missiles at positions of the Daesh terrorist group in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor.

The missile attack, launched from west of Iran, was in retaliation for a recent terrorist attack in Tehran claimed by Daesh.

The strike came a few days after the US Senate passed a bill on new sanctions against Iran. The bill imposes mandatory sanctions on people involved with Iran’s ballistic missile program and those who do business with them. It also applies terrorism-related sanctions to the IRGC and enforces an arms embargo.
