Frustrated at Proxy War, Israel Attacked Syria Directly: General
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A Syrian Army general described Israel’s recent airstrikes inside Syria as "a result of the Zionist regime’s disappointment" at the successive defeats its proxies and the terrorist groups have suffered in military confrontation with the Syrian armed forces.
In an interview with the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Mohammad Abbas hailed the Syrian air defense’s “crushing response” to the Israeli regime’s violation of the Arab country’s airspace.
On Friday, the Syrian Army said in a statement that its air defense units have shot down an Israeli warplane and hit another one after four aircraft had breached the Syrian airspace and attacked government troops near Palmyra.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Syrian general explained that the Tel Aviv regime has become frustrated with the defeats that the “ proxi militants” have suffered in the face of the Syrian military forces.
The terrorists that Israel deploys into Syria are suffering consecutive defeats, so the Zionist regime saw no other option than getting directly involved in the battlefield and launching aerial attacks inside Syria, the general noted.
As regards Israel’s focus on the suburbs of Palmyra, Abbas said the area is the central part of an American plan on disintegration of Syria, and is a region in which the Syrian military forces have gained major victories.
In early March, the Syrian army announced it has recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra from Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group for the second time in a year, with help from allied forces and Russian warplanes.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
