TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian Air Defense concluded a large-scale military exercise in southern parts of the country on Wednesday.

The drill, codenamed Defenders of Velayat Skies 7, began on Monday covering an area of 496,000 square kilometers in Iran’s southern areas, mainly the provinces of Hormozgan, Bushehr and Khuzestan.

More than 17,000 armed forces took part in the drill, which came to an end on Wednesday with a military parade.

The main purpose of the exercise was improving coordination between various air defense units of the armed forces, serving either in the Army or the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

The drill also set a record in the tactical mobility of armed forces, after the rapid deployment of radar and missile systems, artillery units, as well as communication and electronic warfare systems to the operation zone.

The Air Defense employed a broad range of equipment in the maneuver, including tactical radars, mobile watch posts, homegrown missile systems as well as ground-based and air-based eavesdropping systems.

During the exercise, the Iranian forces warned several fighter jets and drones belonging to the US Navy not to approach the airspace of the war game.

Iran’s Air Defense holds routine military exercises throughout the year. The country’s integrated air defense network protects 3,700 sensitive sites across the country, including nuclear facilities.
