No Fire near NATO Base in Turkey's Izmir, Spokeswoman Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – NATO rejected a recent report that a massive fire had erupted near its base in Western Turkey, stressing that “no fire took place” on the alliance’s land.

“No fire took place in the NATO land component headquarters in Izmir, nor in areas adjacent to it. Our headquarters in Izmir is fully operational,” Irina Novakova, a spokeswoman for the military alliance, said in an email message to the Tasnim News Agency.

“The fire in question occurred in an area close to a Turkish naval base. Please approach the Turkish authorities for any further question,” she added.

Back on July 25, media reports said that a massive fire had threatened the Allied Land Command (LANDCOM), a standing headquarters for NATO land forces, base at Şirinyer (Buca) in İzmir, Turkey.

LANDCOM is tasked with supporting US troops to enhance reaction time and the unit is equipped to respond to international crises.
