A statement issued by Hezbollah's press office said that talks with Seyed Jawad al-Shahristani highlighted the general situation in Lebanon and the region as well as the political and religious developments.

The statement did not specify when the meeting took place, but said it was held in the presence of senior Hezbollah officials, the Daily Star reported on Saturday.

The meeting coincides with the visit of Prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr to Beirut.

Sadr reportedly arrived in Beirut Sunday in a visit outside the media spotlight.

The nature of his trip remains unclear. However, An-Nahar newspaper said Friday that the Shiite cleric is in Lebanon on a routine visit.

Iraq's former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is also reportedly on a trip to Beirut.
