Iran’s Zarif Condoles with Belgium over Terror Attacks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned the suicide bomb blasts that ripped through Brussels on Tuesday, and expressed sympathy with the Belgian nation and families of the victims of the terrorist attacks.

In a telephone conversation with Belgium’s Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, the top Iranian diplomat renewed the call for concerted action by the international community in the fight against terrorism.

“Terrorism and extremism are global threats, and beating them requires global action,” Zarif said.

On Tuesday morning, two explosions at the Brussels airport and another at a busy metro station in the Belgian capital killed at least 35 people and wounded 230 others.

Daesh (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks, but authorities said it is too soon to say for sure whether the terror group was behind the blasts.

For the first time in the country’s history, Belgium raised the terror threat to the highest "fourth" level, the country's prime minister said.

Borders with France and the Netherlands were also closed.
