Protests Held across Bahrain ahead of Revolution Anniversary

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bahraini people once again staged peaceful protests across the Persian Gulf country to renew their call for democracy and end of human rights violations by the Manama regime, as dissidents are preparing to hold the anniversary of Bahrain’s revolution on February 14.

During the demonstrations held in various parts of the country on Thursday evening, the protesters chanted anti-regime slogans.

They held the protests in districts near the capital, Manama, including Sitra, Bilad al-Qadim, the hometown of the jailed opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman, al-Musalla, Diraz and Bani Jamra.

As in the past, Bahraini security forces attacked the peaceful protesters and tried to disperse them by firing tear gas and rubber-coated bullets.

The uprising in Bahrain began on February 14, 2011. Protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. However, the demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.

Scores of people have been killed in the crackdown and security forces have arrested hundreds including doctors and nurses. Dozens of demonstrators have also been sentenced to jail terms for attending street protests.

International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Manama regime for its excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.
