Iran to Complain to UN about Saudi Airstrikes on Embassy in Yemen: Diplomat
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced that the country will submit a report to the United Nations to complain about Saudi Arabia’s recent airstrikes on its embassy in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Amir Abdollahian pointed to a recent rocket attack by the Saudi regime near the Iranian embassy in Sana’a, saying that unfortunately, one of the embassy guards has been severely injured.
“We have put the issue on the agenda and with an official report to the UN, we plan to brief them (UN authorities) on the details of the issue in a few hours,” he added.
On Wednesday night, Saudi Arabia launched a rocket attack on the Iranian embassy, which incurred damages to the building and wounded several guards.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister further emphasized that the country plans to pursue the issue of the Saudi attack on its diplomatic building through legal and international channels.
The attack came amid the recent tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia mainly caused by Riyadh’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, and a subsequent attack by outraged Iranian protesters on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the Ara country’s decision to sever its ties with the Islamic Republic.
On January 2, Saudi Arabia announced that it has executed Sheikh Nimr, among dozens of others. The execution ignited widespread international condemnation, from both political and religious figures.
On January 3, furious demonstrators in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad stormed Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic buildings in protest at the execution of Sheikh Nimr.
Although Iranian officials criticized the embassy attack and police arrested dozens involved, Saudi Arabia on Sunday cut off diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic.
