No Change in Iran’s Support for Syria: Deputy FM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian reiterated the Islamic Republic’s unwavering support for Syria.
There has been no change in Iran’s policy of support for the Syrian government, sovereignty, territorial integrity and respect for its people’s will, he said in a meeting in Tehran with Syria’s grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.
“The Iranian government and nation will continue backing Syria’s nation and government in their confrontation with terrorist groups whose hands are stained with the blood of oppressed Syrians,” Amir Abdollahian stated.
He added that Syria is at the forefront of the fight against terrorism and that the Arab country’s people stand by its government in resistance against extremist terrorist groups.
Sheikh Hassoun, for his part, hailed the Islamic Republic’s role in the region and world and praised Iran’s support for the rights of Muslims and the oppressed people of the world.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including ISIL (Daesh), currently controlling parts of it.
According to the United Nations, more than 250,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
Back in June, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.
