Top Iranian, EU Diplomats Meet ahead of Vienna Meeting on Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini held a gathering on the eve of an international meeting in Austria, set up to find a way out of a lingering crisis that has engulfed Syria for more than four years.

Politics

Zarif and Mogherini met at Vienna’s Hotel Bristol on Thursday, and discussed a range of issues, such as the regional developments and the implementation process of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a final nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Representatives from a number of world powers and regional countries, including Russia, the US, Britain, France, Germany, Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates are in Vienna to discuss ways to find a solution to the four-and-a-half-year war in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the ISIL, currently controlling parts of it.

According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
