JCPOA Joint Commission Convenes in Vienna

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A joint commission, tasked with monitoring commitments to a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, came into being and brought diplomats from the two sides together for its first official session in Vienna on Monday.

Iranian deputies foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht Ravanchi, attended the joint commission’s first meeting on behalf of Iran.

The commission has been formed to oversee the process of implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

According to Araqchi, the Monday session in Vienna is aimed at announcing the formation of the joint commission, discussing the latest developments surrounding the JCPOA, and reviewing commitments of the parties in the interval between the Adoption Day and the Implementation Day.

Back on July 14, known as the Finalization Day, Iran and the sextet finalized the text of the JCPOA, which is going to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran after taking effect.

Sunday was the Adoption Day, when Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini issued a joint statement to announce the official adoption of the JCPOA.

On the Adoption Day, which came 90 days after the Finalization Day, the EU adopted the legislative framework for lifting all of its nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions against Iran.

The US also took action to cease application of nuclear-related statutory sanctions on Iran effective on Implementation Day when the IAEA has verified implementation of agreed nuclear measures by Iran, as specified in the JCPOA.
