Senior MP: Iran Strongly Opposed to Disintegration of Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran is vehemently opposed to Iraq's disintegration.

Politics

The Islamic Republic of Iran feels committed to supporting Iraq and is strongly opposed to partitioning of its Western neighbor, Boroujerdi made the remarks in a Sunday meeting with Yan Kubish, the UN special envoy for Iraq, in Tehran.

Stressing Iran's continued support for the territorial integrity of Iraq, the Iranian lawmaker underlined that maintaining unity and solidarity among different political, religious and ethnic groups plays a key role in restoring peace and security to the war-torn country.

Elsewhere, Boroujerdi condemned US and its allies for lack of seriousness in their fight against terrorism and extremism in the region, and underscored that categorizing terrorists into “good and bad” and providing them with funds and arms were among the US strategic mistakes in Syria which account for the current situation in the Arab country.

Yan Kobish, for his part, hailed Iran’s help for reconstruction of Iraq and establishment of peace and security in the country, and added, “Continuation of Iran’s support for Iraq in the field of economy and conveyance of its political experience to the country is of paramount importance.”

Iraq has been the scene of clashes between military forces and the ISIL terrorists since the foreign-backed militants attacked the Arab country from Syria in summer 2014.

The terrorists made advances in northern and western Iraq after capturing swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive.
