Iran Hails Russia’s Decision to Take Action in Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch attacks on terrorist groups in Syria.
“We believe that Moscow’s actions (against terrorists in Syria) will be significant, key and influential measures in the fight on terrorism at this juncture,” the Iranian diplomat said on Thursday.
He stressed that Tehran welcomes President Putin’s decision to start a “serious fight” against terrorism in Syria, and probably later in Iraq.
Amir-Abdollahian said Russia’s military action against terrorists in Syria was launched at the request of the Damascus government, after a US-led coalition failed to take any effective action in the battle against the ISIL terrorist group in about a whole year.
He underlined that Tehran and Moscow hold constant consultations about the intensification of ISIL activities in Syria and their dire consequences for the neighboring states and the whole region.
The deputy minister went on to say that Iran, as a pioneer of countering terrorism in Syria, Iraq and other counties, has always encouraged Russia to take “influential and serious” actions on terrorism in the region.
Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, after Russia's parliament granted President Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.
