Jaafari: Foreign Intervention Accounts for Emergence of Terrorism in Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria's Ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari said that foreign military intervention in Syria is the main reason behind emergence and spreading of terrorism in the war-hit Arab country.
“It is impossible to deal with the painful humanitarian situation in Syria apart from the backgrounds of foreign economic, military and political intervention in the Syrian scene as this (foreign) intervention was the reason behind the emergence, feeding and the spread of terrorism in Syria and the region,” al-Jaafari said during a speech at a UN Security Council session, SANA reported on Thursday.
The envoy added that Syrians have proven that they can resolve their problems through dialog on their own.
In order to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Syria and stem the growth of terrorism in the Arab country as well as the region, foreign intervention should be halted, he underscored.
Syria has been plagued by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The conflict is estimated to have claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.
More than 7.2 million Syrians have been internally displaced and more than four million others have been forced to flee to neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon.
