In a Tuesday phone conversation with Azerbaijan Republic's Minister of Economy and Industry Shahin Mustafayev, Vaezi underscored Tehran's policy of developing ties with neighboring countries.

Referring to railroad cooperation between the countries, he described the connection of Iran's railroad to that of Azerbaijan as a top priority.

In their conversation, the two sides stressed the promotion of bilateral ties in all political, economic, and social fields, and agreed upon holding the 11th session of Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Commission in the coming months.

Expansion of banking ties, mutual cooperation in the fields of natural gas and power, promotion of transportation cooperation, facilitation of visa issuance, and Iran's export of medicine to Azerbaijan were among other topics discussed by the two ministers.

It was also decided that Mustafayev, at the head of a delegation, travel to Tehran to visit Iran’s economic sectors and to make preliminary coordination for the joint commission.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic ties since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
