Greece Wants Stronger Parliamentary Ties with Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Greek Parliament Speaker Zoi Konstantopoulou called for closer “parliamentary diplomacy” with Iran, expressing interest in visiting Iran at the invitation of her Iranian counterpart.

Parliamentary diplomacy between Iran and Greece needs to be invigorated to prepare the ground for closer ties in other fields, Konstantopoulou said in a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, held in Athens on Thursday.

She also welcomed an invitation to visit Iran, given by Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani.

Zarif, for his part, emphasized the need for the establishment of a parliamentary friendship group between parliaments of the two nations.

Earlier this year, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent a congratulatory message to new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, calling for the expansion of ties between Tehran and Athens.

"I hope that, given the existing political will and the abundant opportunities for cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Greece, we would witness the expansion of bilateral relations and international cooperation between the two countries," Rouhani said in the message.
