Lausanne Statement Basis of Final Nuclear Deal: Iran’s Zarif
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday that a framework agreement, announced in Lausanne, is the base for a comprehensive deal on Tehran’s nuclear program to be reached until end of June.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran upon his arrival from Switzerland, Zarif said a set of solutions, read out in a joint statement on Thursday night, will form the basis for writing the text of a final nuclear accord between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), set to be signed until June 30.
After more than a week of intense diplomatic talks in Lausanne, Iran and the six powers agreed on a framework that provides an outline of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
A joint statement at the end of the Lausanne talks, announced by Zarif and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, asserts that under the final deal, the “EU will terminate the implementation of all nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions and the US will cease the application of all nuclear-related secondary economic and financial sanctions” against Iran.
“A new UN Security Council Resolution will endorse the JCPOA, terminate all previous nuclear-related resolutions and incorporate certain restrictive measures for a mutually agreed period of time,” the statement explains.
In comments posted on his Twitter account, the Iranian foreign minister dismissed incorrect interpretations on the statement, saying, “There is no need to spin using ‘fact sheets’ so early on.”
Reacting to critics who cite a phased or partial lifting of sanctions, Zarif wrote in Twitter that the statement affirms that "The EU will TERMINATE the implementation of ALL nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions.”
The joint statement is meant to pave the way for a final accord that would end more than a decade of standoff on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
