In a Sunday meeting in Tehran with his Iraqi counterpart Hussain Ibrahim Saleh al-Shahristani, Farhadi said the way should be paved for further academic and educational cooperation between the two countries.

He added that Iranian universities are ready to sign sistership agreements with universities in the neighboring country.

Farhadi also noted that some 100 Iranian students are currently studying in Iraq while over 1200 Iraqi students study in Iranian academic centers and the number can grow further.

The Iraqi official, for his part, referred to the deep historical ties between Iran and Iraq and said the two ministries can contribute to the development of economic, scientific, educational and even political relations between the two countries.

Al-Shahristani, who is in Tehran to attend a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states, also highlighted Iraqi universities’ keenness to sign cooperation agreements with Iranian academic centers.
