Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Monday morning before leaving for Baghdad, Eshaq Jahangiri said the visit is aimed at promotion of Iran-Iraq economic ties in an effort to match with the level of political relations.
“The economic relations of the two countries now stand at a proper level, and the volume of (trade) exchange between the two sides is about 12 billion dollars,” the vice president noted.
He said Iran is resolved to play a “pivotal role” in reconstruction of Iraq, adding that Tehran is ready to provide Baghdad with its experiences in construction, science, technology and other fields.
Heading a high-ranking delegation, comprised of 5 ministers and 2 vice presidents, Jahangiri started a three-day tour of Iraq at the invitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
During his stay in Iraq, Jahangiri is planned to hold meetings with Iraqi President Fuad Masum, Prime Minister Abadi, Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri, Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jafari, and the head of the Islamic supreme council of Iraq, Ammar al-Hakim.
The Iranian official also plans to attend Iran-Iraq High Joint Commission as well as a ceremony to sign several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).
