TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani emphasized the importance of closer relations between Tehran and New-Delhi, saying that the ties would serve regional peace and security.

“Tehran welcomes further promotion of cooperation with New-Delhi for establishing and strengthening regional peace and security,” President Rouhani said in a meeting with India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in Tehran on Tuesday.

He also pointed to “good” relations between Iran and India and their influential positions in the region, and said, “Through their mutual cooperation, Tehran and New-Delhi can help the development of both countries."

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president referred to the development of ports, the construction of the North–South Transport Corridor, as well as joint projects on petrochemicals, steel, and medical equipment as areas of economic cooperation between the two Asian countries.

He also expressed the hope that the Indian official’s visit to Iran would help further deepen ties between the two Asian countries in diverse spheres, including economy, politics and culture.

Doval, for his part, voiced his country’s willingness to strengthen relations with Iran through utilization of all capacities.

Iran and India are major trade partners in various fields, especially in the oil industry. Earlier on December 2014, an Iranian official in India announced the opening of an unlimited credit line between an Indian bank and eight Iranian banks to facilitate the trade between the two countries.
