In a Tuesday meeting with Nikolay Spassky, deputy CEO of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sanaei said Tehran attaches significance to joint production of fuel given Iran’s capacities in the field.
He also stressed the need for speeding up the implementation of the agreement signed between the two countries for construction of two new nuclear power plants in the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr.
Spassky, for his part, said Rosatom is ready to start construction of the two nuclear plants, hoping that the project will turn into a successful example of cooperation between the two countries.
He also reminded that despite pressures, the company remained committed to the agreement for building the first nuclear plant in Bushehr.
Iran’s only nuclear power plant in Bushehr, which produces 1,000 megawatts of energy, became officially operational and was connected to the country’s national grid in September 2011.
Earlier this week, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi announced that Tehran and Moscow have signed an agreement for the construction of two more nuclear power plants in Bushehr.
“We are expecting our second nuclear power plant to go online in a matter of eight years and the third one to be operational two years later,” Salehi stated.
He said they will “produce electricity without polluting the environment.”
Power plants running on fossil fuel produce more than seven million tons of greenhouse gases and pollute air in order to produce 1,000 megawatts of electricity, the AEOI chief went on to say.
