NAM Regrets UNSC’s Failure to End Palestinian Occupation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian envoy to the United Nations asked, on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the UN Security Council to fulfill its obligation to end the occupation of Palestine.

“In the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the UNSC’s negligence and lack of action was followed by the Zionist regime’s utmost cruelty and brutality against the defenseless people of Palestine,” Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Hossein Dehghani said in a meeting of the UN Security Council open debate on the status of the Middle East.

“The issue of Palestine has been on UN’s agenda for more than 67 years,” the Iranian envoy noted, regretting that the Security Council has failed to fulfil its obligations about Palestinians.

“Despite serious international efforts and repeated demands for a solution based on international laws, the Palestinian lands are still under occupation by the Israeli regime’s army and the inalienable rights and freedoms of Palestinians are neglected by the occupying regime,” he stated.

Dehghani, whose country holds NAM’s rotating presidency, added that the conditions of Palestinians deteriorated in 2014 and that while the brutality of the Israeli army against the besieged people of Gaza reached its peak during the 50-day invasion of the coastal strip, the aggressive regime was not held accountable.

On November 26, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim 2014 the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (IYSPP).
