“Iran stands by Syria,” Larijani said in a Sunday meeting with his Syrian counterpart Mohammed Jihad al-Laham in Damascus.

He also praised Syria’s resistance against terrorism, saying that it has been effective against terrorists.

Al-Laham, for his part, thanked the Iranian nation and government for their supports for the Syria nation.

Larijani arrived in Damascus on Sunday in the first leg of his 4-day regional tour.

A number of senior officials including Chairman of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian accompany Larijani in the trip which will take him to Lebanon and Iraq as well.

Prior to his departure, Larijani had told reporters at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport that regional, security and parliamentary issues will be on his agenda during his meetings with Syrian, Lebanese and Iraqi officials.
