Official: Iran’s Electricity Industry as Profitable as Oil

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The export of electricity and relevant products can bring Iran as much benefit as it reaps from the oil exports, an energy official said.

Iran has now the capacity to earn above 20 billion dollars by exporting power and the electrical equipment, Seyed Abbas Jafari, an official with Iran’s Energy Ministry told the Tasnim News Agency.

He predicted that Iran’s income from the electricity industry would amount to the oil incomes within the next few years.

Jafari said Iran enjoys a whole host of experts in various fields of electricity industry such as production of power plants, water and electricity equipment, electricity meters, turbines, cables, as well as expertise in the technical and engineering services.

The large number of Iranian experts, advisors and contractors in the electricity industry is sufficient enough for the country’s needs, he added, noting that Iran can well export its products and services to the other countries.

The African and Middle East nations, Syria, the Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan are among the target countries where the Iranian electricity industry has made way.

Earlier in November, Iran's Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian voiced readiness to increase Iran’s power exports to neighboring Iraq.

Iran’s daily electricity exports to Iraq amount to 1300 megawatts and total annual exports are valued at one billion dollars.
