The consignment contains foodstuff and medicine for the war-torn people of Gaza, who have come under heavy Israeli attacks for more than six weeks.
The humanitarian aid, weighing 100 tons, will be airlifted from Iran to Cairo by Iran’s Red Crescent Society.
Egypt’s ultimate permission for the dispatch of humanitarian assistance to Gaza comes after Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian in late July called Cairo’s lengthy delay in issuing the necessary permission for the delivery of Tehran’s aid to the besieged enclave as “unacceptable”.
“We strictly call on the relevant officials in Cairo to accelerate the issuance of (shipment) permission”, he said at the time.
Egypt's frequent closure of the Rafah border crossing, the Palestinian enclave's only lifeline to the outside world, has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in the coastal enclave, particularly after Israel started a new wave of attacks on Gaza on July 8 followed by ground invasion into the enclave.
So far, more than 2,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip in the wake of Israeli military offensive.
